It’s still pretty cold in the Bay Area, but it’s already air conditioner weather in the Valley. This calls for… halo-halo OR something easier than halo-halo… mais con yielo. You’ll need an ice shaver for this one. We’ve had ours for as long as I can remember. I think it’s from Guam circa 1983 (hold your old jokes). This is Brother #1 in action.

Mais con Yielo [literal transalation: corn with ice]

makes 1 serving [measurements are approximate]

  • 3 cups of shaved ice
  • 1/4 cup of evaporated milk
  • 1/3 cup of creamed corn
  • 1 1/2 tsp of sugar
  1. Pour the evaporated milk on top of the shaved ice.
  2. Sprinkle on the sugar and add the corn.
  3. Let folks do their own mixing. 🙂

See? Easy! We added a dollop (okay, like 3 dollops) of ube halaya on top for extra sweetness. Perfect for a hot day.
