fortune seafood, malolos, bulacan
I treated our party of 10 to lunch at Fortune (Hong Kong) Seafood Restaurant in Malolos, Bulacan during our stay. Located on a business strip right off of the MacArthur Highway it is sandwiched between a couple of larger, flashier chain restaurants. Fortune touts itself as being one of those ‘forreal’ Chinese joints. I’m not Chinese so I can’t tell you how authentic it is, but for what it’s worth the meal was pretty darn good. Instead of pouring over the menu we ordered a family meal that set me back about USD 60.
First course: minced beef soup. One of those cornstarch-based, egg drop-like soups wtigh green onions and cabbage. My dad thought it was a bit ‘malansa’ at first but a few squeezes of the lemon cleared that up.
Second course: lumpiang fortune. Their version of lumpiang shangai was not very pretty looking but very good tasting. The fancy garnish in the back was made of jicama. I only know this because my cousin took a bite out of it.
Main course #1: combination chow mein. The usual beef, chicken, shrimp, and squid with veggies gravy over soft noodles. Nicely executed, we finished off most of the serving.
Main course #2: shrimp fried rice. A light, tasty rendition of fried rice. Nice and simple with just green onions and shrimp.
Main course #3: fried chicken garnished with shrimp chips. I found the fried chicken a little dry on the inside with a very oily skin. Not a fave.
Main couse #4: tofu and lapu-lapu in black bean sauce. This came last and was really light and tasty. Fun fact of the day: Lapu-Lapu was the chieftain who killed Magellan. If you’re wondering, we did in fact name a fish after one of our national heroes.
There was another main course of beef shank with tripe but I didn’t get to try it due to super full-ness. I had to leave room for dessert. My mom calls this buchi-buchi. It’s a sesame rice ball wrapped around sweetened red bean. Made and eaten fresh it might be one of the best things ever.
Overall 4.5 stars **** out of 5.
