a serenade for victoria harbor

Not allowed to visit Hong Kong without hitting the light show over Victoria Harbor. After an afternoon of fortune telling and high tea on the Kowloon side, we walked to the promenade to watch the show. The next night we picked a restaurant with a view of the harbor to celebrate our last night in lovely Hong Kong. Our pick? Serenade Restaurant located on the first floor of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

Yup. Pork Belly. For you Filipinos in the house, it’s basically lechon kawali. MG ordered this last minute. It’s listed in the menu under appetizers as a snack size portion of fried pork belly. We gobbled it up and relished the crunchy, fatty skin. No Mang Tomas sauce this time but you will get some Chinese mustard instead.

As our veggie, big ol’ fleshy mushrooms and an unknown green leafy thing. Not gailan, probably spinach. Served in a brown soy based sauce. Sorry for the wacktastic picture. I was ready to pounce on the food by this time.

This was one of my faves from dinner – fried garoupa filet in lemon sauce. (Coulda sworn the menu said they’d be baked but they were clearly fried.) The sauce was appropriately tangy and slightly sweet (like honey which would have been a good mix with the lemon).

The star of the show: more Peking duck. Sliced up just like last time with a mound of skin in the middle. They also served us the rest of the duck in a separate plate. Very overwhelming to see a mountain of duck on your table while you are already super full.

Do your duck right but piling onto a warm pancake with spears of leeks and cucumbers with a dribbling of hoisin sauce. I preferred the pancake at American Peking but the Serenade version was still pretty good.

We also ordered a noodle dish with shrimp, chicken, and veggies. Check out how they served the shrimp – skewered with gailan. These noodles were better than the dish from Yun Kee. We had so much stuff on our table that they had to serve us the noodles individually and keep the main plate on a separate cart.

The server asked if he wanted dessert to which me and Julia shook our heads and patted our very full bellies. MG, however, grabbed the dessert menu which prompted the server to tell us that we were really great (ie really good at eating). MG went for the mango sago (ok but not as good as the mango sago we had been eating all week) and let me have the heart shaped creme and coconut cake on the side.

Overall a very tasty last dinner coupled with a nice view of the famous Harbor. Dinner set us back around HKD700 if I remember correctly. There were only 3 of us but we ordered enough for 4 because we’re piggies. We made reservations through our hotel but I don’t think they are necessarily required. The place is actually known for their ‘cute’ dim sum which they painstakingly make to look like little bunnies and mice and things like that. Dim sum is served until 4:30pm although they offer a few cutesy dim sum at dinner too.

To get there, take the Tsuen Wan MTR line to Tsim Sha Tsui and take the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Exit. The exit will pop you out near the Peninsula, cross the street by going underground again and walk towards the Harbor. The restaurant will be on your right up the stairs.

  1. actually the “brown soy based sauce” is “oyster sauce”
    and the vege under those mushrooms is called “dull-mil” in cantonese (a kind of chinese vegetable), not spinach =)
