ps cafe, dempsey hill

Admittedly, I was not impressed when Thiena mentioned PS Cafe to me. I mean, seriously, S$17 pancakes? Not so appealing. After mulling their site over a bit and hearing everyone else’s raving I figured it was time to give it a shot. When Therese asked if I would be down to check out the area around Dempsey and grab brunch at PS Cafe, I was up for the trek.

And wow what a trek. It took me 3 taxis before I found a driver that had any idea where this place was. Then when we got to Dempsey Hill we went round and round trying to find the cafe. The driver even asked some passerbys with no luck. I ended up getting out and wandering around myself.

Finally…

Therese was already there (trying to get me some assistance via the helpful waitstaff) enjoying some white wine. I ordered myself a lovely peach iced tea to calm the nerves post the wandering in the equatorial sun.

I have always found it interesting that the McDonald’s menu changes to cater to local tastes. Different countries, different meals, different tastes, same brand. McDonald’s is lovingly referred to as ‘McDo’ (accent on the Do). spaghetti a la vezzano basso

We thought the hotel we booked for Cinque Terre was in La Spezia near the train station. Instead, it was a 25 minute taxi drive up the mountain in the small village of Vezzano Basso. At first we weren’t so happy about the inconvenient location of our hotel, but had a complete change of heart as soon as we arrived. The view on your way up to Vezzano Basso is beautiful. The hotel was quiet, clean, spacious, and nicely decorated. The town itself was tiny but in that heck-yah-now-this-is-Italy kind of way.

When we arrived, the front desk guy (who was totally channeling Nathan Lane) asked if he could get us a reservation at the restaurant downstairs. We asked what other there were in town. His answer:

  1. the place downstairs
  2. the pizzeria down the street

Well, then the place downstairs it is. We totally got lucky on this one.
